It’s Definitely Winter

No doubt about it, winter has hit where I live. We lucked out because our first major storm hit us last Wednesday. There was another storm the Monday after Christmas but it hit some parts of the state much harder than others so I don’t really count this one. Wednesday was Storm Benedict and our new governor had non-essential state employees stay home and urged people to stay off the roads. My clinic actually closed (which is a rarity).

At my house, we received about 2 feet of snow. Although I was home, I am over 5 months pregnant so it’s not safe for me to be out shoveling and my husband had to work so when he came home, we were screwed. There was just so much snow! We frantically called plow companies and luckily found one that was available within a half hour. The only problem was that he claimed there was so much snow, that his truck could only plow it halfway down our driveway (mind you, our driveway is not very long). Whatever, just do what you can.

The next morning, our driveway looked like this:

There is a driveway under there somewhere!

We pretty much had to park our cars in back of eachother and play car tetris when we had to leave in the morning. My husband spent all day on Thursday trying to track down a snowblower in our state to no avail. We were double screwed. How would we remove all of this snow? And we’re supposed to get ANOTHER storm system tomorrow.

Thursday afternoon, I came home early because on top of dealing with the snow, my sore throat/cold symptoms came back full force. I was miserable. Stressed over snow and stressed over feeling sick. Not pretty.

But at least my house looks pretty with the snow, right?

However; we haven’t gotten mail delivered to our house since Tuesday because our mailbox was covered and needed to be dug out:

On Saturday, I went into work for a few hours since my clinic is open for part of the day. I had a really productive day, but when I called my husband to tell him I was coming home, I could tell he was just waking from a nap. I was a bit frustrated since he was supposed to spend time that day getting us out of this mess!

I drove home a bit frustrated, pulled onto my street and saw a lot of snow in front of our driveway. Then I pulled into the driveway and noticed that my husband’s car was in his normal spot. Then I noticed that our driveway seemed to be pretty clear and our steps were shoveled off. WHAT?! Did some magic snow removal fairies visit our house while I was away? Yup!

Turns out my parents, my dear, dear parents, came by with their snow blower and my dad did the driveway while my mom and Scott shoveled the areas he could not reach. Amazing! They didn’t tell me they were going to do it so it was a big surprise! They were gone by the time I came home, but Scott made sure to feed them lunch. I was so happy, I almost cried!

Then, if our luck wasn’t amazing enough, yesterday morning, my husband received frantic messages from one of our friends who works for one of those home improvement stores. Turns out he was able to divert some snow blowers to his store and 3 or so of them were arriving that afternoon. If we wanted one, we needed to put our name and info on it NOW! So we set all of that up and waited for the call that they were in. My dear, dear parents met us at the store and drove it all the way back to our house. They are amazing! They even got stuck in some traffic due to an accident which made them even later to our house, on the biggest football day of the season so far. Oy.

But, we now have a new snow blower so bring on the next storm! Well, maybe not. This last one is still pretty and I promise to enjoy the novelty of snow on the ground lots if I don’t have to deal with rearranging my work and personal schedule due to weather again!

  1. I have to say, we’ve been pretty lucky in that we haven’t received massive amounts of snow like you have! We’ve just been dealing with the ridiculously cold temps this past week (Around -30C with wind chill). Winter is definitely my least favorite season!
